Jimmys Taphouse

Jimmys taphouse burger

Jimmys Taphouse is located on Homer Street, right across from the Vancouver Library downtown.

This burger tasted as good as it looks. It has all the components of ‘My Ultimate Burger‘ from the charbroiled in-house made 8oz patty, cheddar cheese, thick crispy bacon all on a brioche bun from a local bakery. It’s been a long time since I’ve had such a great burger and I applaud Jimmys for constructing such a great burger. They even have fresh avocado for the burger, which is a plus in my books. In addition to the burger, the fries were great – they are cut in house, double fried and seasoned to perfection with sea salt. Come to Jimmys with your appetite, because you’ll need it to finish that great burger and fries ! I will definitely be coming back.

Here’s a view from the patio…

Stackhouse Burger Bar – Stackhouse Burger

Stackhouse BurgerIMG_5095

I had some extra time for lunch today, so I decided to try Stackhouse Burger Bar. I heard it was getting some good reviews, so I just had to try it. I had the Stackhouse Burger, which is described as “6.5 oz local prime rib patty with pancetta, portabellini, Guinness cheddar, chipotle aioli and butter lettuce served on a brioche bun” I had their lunch special (from 11-3 pm) – the burger only cost $10 and it comes with fries or salad. This burger delivered on every level – it was cooked and seasoned perfectly, the pancetta was great and the bun was great. It just tasted great ! Not many places serve prime rib burgers, so this was a treat. They also have a Kobe burger that I must try !! Even at the full price of $15 this burger is a big winner, but at $10 it is out of this world – one of the best values in the city ! I’ll be back for sure !

Milestones – American Burger

Milestones burgerMilestones

Well, I haven’t had a burger in a while and its been 8 hours since my last meal. I had some time to kill and I was hungry, so I decided to try Milestones. I had the Milestone’s Beef Burger with the ‘American’ inspired toppings – that is double smoked bacon and cheddar. The burger is described as coming with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle on a toasted sesame seed bun. I added their avocado salsa for an extra $1.99 – that was not worth it – I would rather have plain fresh avocado.

When I got the burger, it looked amazing – the beef was thick and juicy and the bacon was overflowing ! The taste was great and I actually thought to myself, where’s the bun? – this is not a bad thing. The burger filled me and satisfied me very much. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back. The only negative I would say is that I think they butter the buns prior to toasting – as many places do. I personally find this overdoes the grease factor – I mean, we already have the burger grease and the mayo – we don’t need anymore. But that was a minor issue – wouldn’t stop me from going back in a heartbeat – And of course – I could have asked for no butter on the bun, as I usually do ! – My fault there !

Point Pub – Point Burger

The Point Burger2524 St Johns Street, Port Moody, BC.

Today, I went to the Point Pub with a 2 for 1 coupon, only to find out that we could not use the coupon for burgers – what a drag.
Anyways, the burger arrived, looked quite good – it was open and had lettuce, tomato, red onion and a pickle. I added bacon for an extra $2.00 (twice as much as most places charge). At first, the burger tasted good, but as I went on the sauce overtook the burger and made it just so-so. Overall, not a terrible burger – one of the better pub burgers I have had, but I haven’t had too many. The burger is a house made 1/2 pounder and you can tell – The burger is not round at all ! – which isnt a bad thing. Nice to see places making their own burgers.

Moxie’s Classic Grill – Classic Beef Burger

Moxie's BurgerDecided to try out Moxie’s Burger today. The description on the menu is “all our beef burgers are served on a toasted kaiser & topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles & grainy dijon burger sauce” I asked for avocado and I got it ! The burger was pretty good – not too greasy, not too dry. Overall, this is fairly average – nothing to go crazy about, but also good enough for a second time. Price below includes cheese and bacon added for $0.99 each.

Morgan’s Bistro – Angus Burger

Well, I decided to spend the day in Harrison Hot Springs and when I was hungry, I walked by this nice little restaurant. Of course, I had to try their burger ! I had their Angus Burger, which has tomato, lettuce, pickles, cheddar, bacon, caramelized onions and a chipotle mayo. I asked for fresh avocado and the server said, sure if we have it. I can tell you now, that they didn’t have it or they forgot. Anyways, the burger was very good, nice and juicy. I thought it tasted great; however, I wasn’t impressed with the amount of butter slathered on the bread – I actually didn’t finish the bread, because it was so greasy ! If I was to make further recommendations, I would say use romaine lettuce and one extra strip of bacon. Otherwise, this was an outstanding burger. If I had it again (which I would), I would just asked for an un-buttered bun.

Bridges Restaurant – Bridges Classic Burger

Bridges Restaurant burgerBridges Restaurant

After a nice kayaking adventure in False Creek, we decided to go to Bridges Restaurant. I had the “Bridges Classic Burger”, which is described simply as “cheddar cheese, bacon, fries” I asked for fresh avocado, but unfortunately, they only had guacamole. At this price ($17.00) I was expecting something over the top. When the burger came, it looked fine – It was presented in a closed fashion and had tomato, iceberg lettuce, white onions and a mystery sauce that looked like it was splatted on the top half of the bun – it looked like 1000 Island, but had a spicy kick to it – actually, it wasn’t too bad. Overall the burger was quite tasty, but the patty was nothing special. At this price, you must go with a prime rib patty or something special. Also, I’m tired of ordering fairly expensive burgers served with iceberg lettuce – I feel that premium burgers should have better lettuce, such as romaine. I think, at this location, you’re paying extra just for the scenery.

Mr. Mikes – Bacon MikeBurger

Mr. MikesMr Mikes Chilliwack #9976

Mr. Mikes was the place to go tonight. They were promoting their burger at a local event (I didnt try it there), so I decided to try it in the restaurant. I had the Bacon Mikeburger. Mikeburgers are described as: “grilled over an open flame, served on our famous toasted garlic French loaf with Mikes special sauce and fries. All dressed or straight up – it’s the burger that won the west” The burger tasted pretty good; however, look at the size of those onions !! – I took them off – I think they would have ruined the flavour of the burger. I didn’t find that the special sauce did much for the burger – just not the right flavour for me. And the french loaf that’s its served on is unique, but a little too much bread for me. Overall the taste was alright, but I’m not crazy about this burger.

Hamilton Street Grill – Hamilton Street Burger

Hamilton Street GrillCIMG0227

During my research on Vancouver burgers, I found that some people liked the burger here, so I had to try it out. I had the Hamilton Street Burger, which is described as: House-ground Certified Angus Beef, bacon, Aged white cheddar, chipotle mayo. The burger was not presented as shown; it was closed with the lettuce, tomato and onions on the side. I guess they wanted to hide the disgusting mess of a bun, with all the butter and big clump of the mayo (which didn’t do much for flavour). The onions were dry, like they had been cut a day before and the tomato was kind of small. The flame-grilled burger patty was alright; however, a smidge burnt. I had asked for fresh avocado on the burger, for which the server said it should be no problem; I guess they forgot about that !! As I chomped into the burger, the taste was alright, but soon I found myself looking for the ketchup for some flavour. The bottom bun started to fall apart, which doesn’t happen too much. Overall, I was not impressed at all and will definitely stay away from this place.

Monk McQueens – Prime Rib Burger

Can’t remember the last time I went to Monks, but I should have come back much sooner. I had the Monks Prime Rib Burger – It has an 8 oz house recipe prime rib & mild Italian sausage patty, cheddar cheese, bacon, sautéed mushrooms, red relish & roasted garlic mayo. All on an onion bun. And they gave me fresh avocado, which I love. From the moment, they brought the burger, my mouth was watering – this burger is huge and damn tasty. My only disappointment was that some of the bacon was burnt. Overall, I highly recommend this burger and would go back in a heart beat. This is the most expensive burger I’ve had to date. Comparable choices would be Boston Pizza’s burger ($4.50 cheaper too) and the Fish House’s burger (both Prime Rib burgers).
