Save-On Meats – The Burger

Save-on Meats BurgerSave-On Meats

Well, I finally got around to visiting the revamped Save-On Meats on West Hastings. From what I’ve read and heard, Save-On Meats prides themselves on their hamburger – they even claim it to be “The Best Damn Deal in town”. According to their website, the burgers are made with hand ground chuck steak and fresh herbs daily. The burgers are topped with their butcher shop bacon, melted cheddar, smoky BBQ sauce, tomato and lettuce. It comes with a choice of fries, mash, coleslaw or a green salad. All this for $6.00. Going in I thought to myself, how can you get a good burger for $6.00, so my expectations were not high. However, after having the burger, I was pleasantly surprised. This burger was great. The herbs in the burger and the sauce really make this burger. The beef was nice and moist too and not greasy, which is always a plus ! For $6.00, this is in the lower price category, but this would rank high in the $8.00 – $11.99 category too ! I highly recommend this burger if you’re in the area. Bottom line – We have a new #1 in the category “Less than $7.99”

Splitz – Legendary Splitz Burger – Double Stacker

Double Stacker Burgersplitz10-003-1024x682

Was referred to this place by another hamburger joint. Must say, I was hungry and it was a long time since I had a burger, so I had their double stacker – that’s 2/3 pound – that’s 10 2/3 ounces !! This burger was great – they use shredded cheese like another place I’ve been to and it really brings out the cheese flavour – makes sense – more surface area, more flavour. I couldn’t believe I ate the whole thing – it was really good. I wasn’t hungry for another 10 hours ! I would go back here any day and recommend it for anyone who likes burgers. I can’t remember the price for the burger alone, but with the extra cost for cheese, bacon, fries and a drink, the whole thing cost $16.74 – Can’t compare this with my other prices listed, as this was a double stacker and came with fries and a drink – The cost before all the extras is just in line with most burger joints. The photo doesn’t give the burger justice – must have had bad lighting !

Burger55 – Classic Beef Burger

Burger 55 BurgerBurger 55

Well, I had a recent trip to the great town of Penticton and before going I researched to find a great burger place. What I came up with was Burger55. This little restaurant, which has been in business for about two years, delivers some serious food. To say the least, I was not disappointed. Upon entry, you grab a clipboard and design your own burger. I had mine with an Angus Burger, tomato, lettuce, pickle, banana peppers, Canadian Back Bacon, aged cheddar cheese, the 55 Signature spread all on a cracked wheat bun. The burger was cooked to order and all the ingredients were fresh. Oh my gawd – I sunk my teeth into this beauty and enjoyed every bite – it tasted so good. I can’t wait to come back ! This burger would stand up to almost anything I’ve had before.

Milestones – American Burger

Milestones burgerMilestones

Well, I haven’t had a burger in a while and its been 8 hours since my last meal. I had some time to kill and I was hungry, so I decided to try Milestones. I had the Milestone’s Beef Burger with the ‘American’ inspired toppings – that is double smoked bacon and cheddar. The burger is described as coming with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle on a toasted sesame seed bun. I added their avocado salsa for an extra $1.99 – that was not worth it – I would rather have plain fresh avocado.

When I got the burger, it looked amazing – the beef was thick and juicy and the bacon was overflowing ! The taste was great and I actually thought to myself, where’s the bun? – this is not a bad thing. The burger filled me and satisfied me very much. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back. The only negative I would say is that I think they butter the buns prior to toasting – as many places do. I personally find this overdoes the grease factor – I mean, we already have the burger grease and the mayo – we don’t need anymore. But that was a minor issue – wouldn’t stop me from going back in a heartbeat – And of course – I could have asked for no butter on the bun, as I usually do ! – My fault there !

Point Pub – Point Burger

The Point Burger2524 St Johns Street, Port Moody, BC.

Today, I went to the Point Pub with a 2 for 1 coupon, only to find out that we could not use the coupon for burgers – what a drag.
Anyways, the burger arrived, looked quite good – it was open and had lettuce, tomato, red onion and a pickle. I added bacon for an extra $2.00 (twice as much as most places charge). At first, the burger tasted good, but as I went on the sauce overtook the burger and made it just so-so. Overall, not a terrible burger – one of the better pub burgers I have had, but I haven’t had too many. The burger is a house made 1/2 pounder and you can tell – The burger is not round at all ! – which isnt a bad thing. Nice to see places making their own burgers.

Moxie’s Classic Grill – Classic Beef Burger

Moxie's BurgerDecided to try out Moxie’s Burger today. The description on the menu is “all our beef burgers are served on a toasted kaiser & topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles & grainy dijon burger sauce” I asked for avocado and I got it ! The burger was pretty good – not too greasy, not too dry. Overall, this is fairly average – nothing to go crazy about, but also good enough for a second time. Price below includes cheese and bacon added for $0.99 each.

Morgan’s Bistro – Angus Burger

Well, I decided to spend the day in Harrison Hot Springs and when I was hungry, I walked by this nice little restaurant. Of course, I had to try their burger ! I had their Angus Burger, which has tomato, lettuce, pickles, cheddar, bacon, caramelized onions and a chipotle mayo. I asked for fresh avocado and the server said, sure if we have it. I can tell you now, that they didn’t have it or they forgot. Anyways, the burger was very good, nice and juicy. I thought it tasted great; however, I wasn’t impressed with the amount of butter slathered on the bread – I actually didn’t finish the bread, because it was so greasy ! If I was to make further recommendations, I would say use romaine lettuce and one extra strip of bacon. Otherwise, this was an outstanding burger. If I had it again (which I would), I would just asked for an un-buttered bun.

ABC Country Restaurant – Swiss, Bacon & Avocado Burger

ABC BurgerCIMG0070

Someone suggested to me that I try out one of ABC’s new burgers. They seem to be promoting their burgers quite a bit in the media. So, today, I looked over their selection of burgers and decided on the Swiss, Bacon & Avocado Burger, but I asked for cheddar instead of swiss. This burger is described as “A grilled soft pretzel bun, burger sauce, beef patty, Canadian natural Swiss cheese, two slices of grilled smoked bacon, and fresh avocado” It also has tomato, romaine lettuce and a mayo/relish sauce. The burger patty is flame grilled, so it has that great flavour, that you can’t get from the flat top. The burger was presented very nicely and tasted pretty good. Even though the patty was flame-grilled, it was kinda of small. I would have liked to have seen a larger patty. Overall, this is a pretty good burger, especially considering it is from a family restaurant.

Bridges Restaurant – Bridges Classic Burger

Bridges Restaurant burgerBridges Restaurant

After a nice kayaking adventure in False Creek, we decided to go to Bridges Restaurant. I had the “Bridges Classic Burger”, which is described simply as “cheddar cheese, bacon, fries” I asked for fresh avocado, but unfortunately, they only had guacamole. At this price ($17.00) I was expecting something over the top. When the burger came, it looked fine – It was presented in a closed fashion and had tomato, iceberg lettuce, white onions and a mystery sauce that looked like it was splatted on the top half of the bun – it looked like 1000 Island, but had a spicy kick to it – actually, it wasn’t too bad. Overall the burger was quite tasty, but the patty was nothing special. At this price, you must go with a prime rib patty or something special. Also, I’m tired of ordering fairly expensive burgers served with iceberg lettuce – I feel that premium burgers should have better lettuce, such as romaine. I think, at this location, you’re paying extra just for the scenery.

Romer’s Burger Bar – Standard Burger with Bacon and Cheese

There’s a nice little burger joint in Kitsilano and its called Romers. Romers is a cozy restaurant with nice ambience and its located on busy 4th Avenue, one block west of Burrard Street. Today, I had the Standard burger which is described as “All-natural beef, vine-ripened tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, onion, pickles, R sauce” The R sauce is similar to 1000 Island dressing. I asked for this burger with bacon and cheese and avocado – Unfortunately, they forgot the avocado ! The R sauce didn’t do too much for me; I would prefer a more bolder taste. The bacon was curly and dry – I want my bacon flat and glistening !! The bun was pretty good – it held together fine and tasted okay. The patty was decent – not a whole lot of flavour. Overall, the burger was just okay in my opinion – nothing to write home about. One thing I would like to say is that the servers were very nice and the decor in the restaurant is nice. They have some pretty nifty burger concoctions on their website, so if any of those strike your fancy, check it out – It just may be YOUR favourite burger !
